The Institute’s REDs team is supporting International Myotonic Dystrophy Awareness Day

Today, 15 September 2026, marks the 5th International Myotonic Dystrophy (MD) Awareness Day.
The aim is to raise awareness amongst the medical profession, policymakers and the general public about this neuromuscular disorder in order to improve diagnosis, management and support for patients, as well as to accelerate the development of medicines.
At the institute, the REDs team at the Myology Institute’s Research Centre focuses its research primarily on type 1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1), also known as Steinert’s disease. It is led by Geneviève Gourdon and Denis Furling and also includes the group led by Guillaume Bassez, a neurologist who coordinates the national myotonic dystrophy registry, DM-Scope.
The team’s aim is to create synergies in order to accelerate translational research into this neuromuscular disorder and to develop alternative treatments for patients. Within this framework, the team’s expertise is focused on conducting integrated research into DM1, ranging from the mutationModification soudaine et transmissible du matériel génétique. The REDs team and the Myology Research Centre are supporting Myotonic Dystrophy Awareness Day. They are in the lobby of the Babinski Building at La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital to provide information about the condition and their ongoing research.
