Psychology and neuropsychology
Consultation
The Psychology and Neuropsychology team, led by Prof. Marcela Gargiulo, PhD, has long-standing expertise in supporting patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMD) and their families. It offers patients psychological assessment and follow-up consultations to help them at different stages of the disease.
The team’s psychologists have also set up support groups for young adults with an NMD and for patients with autoimmune myasthenia gravis, as well as a cognitive remediation group for patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), which notably uses a serious game to improve social interactions.
The main projects conducted with patients with DM1 are: Acting earlier and faster, Delicate navigation through social information, and A serious game to improve social interactions.
Team members also take part in continuing education activities to pass on their expertise in the psychological and neuropsychological aspects of neuromuscular diseases.

Research
The team’s research is organised along two lines: social sciences and humanities (SSH) and neuropsychology.
The research team is led by Prof. Marcela Gargiulo and Dr Nathalie Angeard.
In SSH, the team focuses on the psychosocial impact of neuromuscular diseases on patients and their families.
In neuropsychology, the team studies neurocognitive and socio-emotional disorders in paediatric and/or adult neuromuscular diseases, and the impact of early neurogenetic vulnerabilities on the developmental trajectory of cognitive functions with protracted maturation (executive functions, social cognition, memory).
Our main research projects address: Parenting and spinal muscular atrophy, Disclosure of a neuromuscular disease in adulthood (AMNA), Disclosure of a neuromuscular disease in adulthood (AMNA) and Decision-making in a context of prenatal uncertainty (ACCED).
