This course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge of peripheral neuropathies: recognition of the various clinical forms, specific tests, and therapeutic management of acute and chronic neuropathies

DIU Neuropathies périphériques

This DIU, a French inter-university diploma, brings together two French universities: Paris Saclay University and Sorbonne University. The academic and scientific directors are Prof. Andoni Echaniz-Laguna, Prof. Shahram Attarian, Prof. Laurent Magy, Prof. Jean-Christophe Antoine and Prof. Jean-Philippe Camdessanche.

This DIU is intended for medical doctors holding a DES in Neurology (the French postgraduate specialty diploma), and also for electrophysiologists, rheumatologists, rehabilitation physicians or any physician with a strong interest in this course, by special dispensation following the opinion of the teaching committee. The course is open to all French-speaking international applicants (EEC and non-EEC)

Course organisation

  • The course lasts 80 hours and consists of four modules of two consecutive days, from November to May, in person only.
  • Practical placement: 100 hours. Course locations: Pitié-Salpêtrière and Kremlin-Bicêtre
    Course start: November 2026. Course end: May 2027

Assessment

  • Knowledge is assessed in three ways: continuous assessment (attendance is compulsory), a 100-hour placement in a Rare Disease Reference Centre and a written examination.

Registration

  • Registration is open from May to September for the following session.
  • Send the teaching secretariat an up-to-date CV + a cover letter + a copy of the degree  giving access to the course

Objectives

This course aims to:

  • provide additional theoretical knowledge to trainee doctors and senior neurologists
  • recognise the various clinical forms of peripheral neuropathies
  • master current knowledge of the pathophysiological determinants of peripheral neuropathies
  • know the indications and limitations of additional tests: electrophysiology, imaging, histopathology, immunology, genetics, etc.
  • conduct an appropriate aetiological work-up
  • deliver the therapeutic management of acute and chronic peripheral neuropathies: use of immunomodulatory treatments, rehabilitation, surgery…
