An Italian study on anaesthetic practice in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

The Italian consortium dedicated to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) has carried out a survey on the procedures, patient experiences and outcomes of anaesthesia administered to patients with CMT:

  • a specially designed self-administered questionnaire was distributed to patients listed in the CMT-Italy register as well as to control subjects,
  • which examined all types of anaesthesia, whether general (with or without intubation), axial (epidural and others) or regional (various blocks),
  • 290 patients with CMT and 94 healthy control subjects completed the questionnaire, corresponding to 508 and 161 anaesthetic procedures respectively,
  • they reported very few post-anaesthetic complications in both groups, which were mostly transient.

The authors highlight this good tolerance, although further, more detailed studies, better supported by objective measurements, are needed to confirm this.
