Diabetes is more common in late-onset dermatomyositis, regardless of corticosteroid use

A retrospective analysis was carried out using the medical records of 434 patients with late-onset dermatomyositis, matched with a control cohort.

  • The prevalence of diabetes was significantly higher in the patient group (23.6 per cent) than in the control cohort (10.5 per cent).
  • More than half of the diagnoses of diabetes were made before the start of glucocorticoid treatment, and the onset of diabetes was not associated with the use of these medicines.
  • A high body mass index, hypertension and dyslipidaemia were significantly associated with diabetes, unlike the presence of specific autoantibodies or those associated with dermatomyositis.

These results confirm the need for early and regular cardiometabolic screening in people with dermatomyositis.
