In the latest issue of VLM, just published, several articles highlight research work carried out by the experts of the Institute of Myology:

• Improving cellular recycling… and gene therapy: Researchers from the Institute of Myology and Généthon have shown that the maintenance and recycling of the contents of muscle cells are disrupted in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. By repairing the self-cleaning system of muscle cells, gene therapy could become more effective. Sofia Benkhelifa-Ziyyat, research director in Marc Bitoun’s team, has identified a very early dysfunction in one of these recycling mechanisms: the endolysosomal pathway, which governs the formation and proper functioning of the key players in recycling, the lysosomes. ➣ Read the article
• Exoskeletons in real-world conditions: promise and limits in neuromuscular diseases: At the Institute of Myology, Romain Feigean, a researcher at the Neuromuscular Physiology and Evaluation Laboratory, and his team are exploring, as part of the AssistMyo programme, the effects of exoskeletons in people living with a neuromuscular disease. Two recent studies reveal a complex picture: while these devices relieve the load on certain muscles, they also alter gait and transfers. ➣ Read the article
• Steinert disease: effective prevention of cardiac risk: Myotonic dystrophy type 1, also known as Steinert disease, can lead to very severe cardiac complications, which the implantation of a pacemaker can prevent. France is at the forefront in this field: a scientific study led by Prof. Karim Wahbi, a cardiologist in the Service of Neuro-Myology and team leader of Registries and databases at the Institute, has just confirmed the soundness of this prevention strategy. ➣ Read the article
