Telemedicine and Covid19 : a rather positive change in practices

The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has led to significant changes in the doctor-patient relationship, thanks in particular to new remote medicine technologies. The European Network of Excellence for Neuromuscular Diseases (Euro-NMD) has conducted a dedicated survey among its members:

  • 42 centers out of the 76 that belong to the network responded to the survey,
  • all of them have increased their use of remote medicine technologies,
  • these were mainly telephone consultations or actual teleconsultations,
  • the vast majority of the centers were satisfied with this alternative way of working,
  • These systems, however useful and satisfactory they may be, were not very well adapted for first diagnoses and for patients with cognitive difficulties.

Nevertheless, in the opinion of many, remote medicine must remain the exception, as nothing can replace face-to-face medical appointments.
