A new tool for the follow-up of myasthenia gravis in teleconsultation

The Covid-19 pandemic has boosted the use of video consultations and it is in this favourable context that a team of Italian neurologists has designed the Myasthenia Gravis TeleScore (MGTS). This assessment scale dedicated to remote consultations of patients with myasthenia gravis:

  • is derived in part from the Instituto Nazionale Carlo Besta score for Myasthenia Gravis (INCB-MG);
  • has 10 items, divided into four domains (ocular, bulbar, respiratory, general muscle strength);
  • is based on clinical criteria (looking for diplopia, performing squats, counting up to 50 out loud…) and anamnestic criteria (looking for swallowing disorders, fatigue when brushing teeth or combing hair…).

The Italian team compared, in 131 participants, the results of the TeleScore in teleconsultation with a neurologist, to those of the INCB-MG in face-to-face consultation with another neurologist. This comparison shows a strong correlation (82%) of the two assessments, in favor of using the TeleScore in teleconsultation.
