The first image database on muscle

Until then, there was no database offering a comprehensive, documented record of muscle biopsies from patients or diseased animals, whether treated or not. Bruno Cadot, a researcher at the Center of Research in Myology, and Dr Norma Beatriz Romero, former head of the Histopathology Laboratory at the Institute of Myology, came up with the idea of creating a Muscle Atlas and building a database from the muscle biopsies analysed, for the most part, in their own laboratory.

Close to 6,500 photographs of muscle biopsies, of both animal and human origin, all characterised according to the type of involvement and at different stages of the disease, have been catalogued to date, and the collection is regularly enriched with new cases.

This unprecedented database allows researchers and physicians to move faster in their research and in the diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases. It is regularly and continuously enriched by contributions from researchers and physicians around the world.
