The remit of the Service of Neuro-Myology covers diagnostic expertise in neuromuscular disease and its complications, therapeutic management, genetic counselling, support for patients throughout their care pathway, as well as clinical research.
The conditions assessed may be genetic in origin (dystrophies, congenital myopathies, metabolic myopathies, congenital myasthenic syndromes, neuropathies) or acquired (myasthenia gravis, inflammatory, endocrine, toxic or drug-induced myopathies, psychogenic disorders).
The Service of Neuro-Myology is a department of Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), the Paris public hospital system, providing specialised and multidisciplinary consultations in a day hospital setting for adults. These consultations are delivered by practitioners specialising in neurology, internal medicine and clinical immunology, genetics, rehabilitation medicine, and clinical psychology and neuropsychology.
It is supported by the I-Motion clinical trial platform and by the Neurosciences Clinical Investigation Centre (CIC) at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
Since the investigation of neuromuscular diseases generally requires additional tests, the department has on-site technical facilities for carrying out some of these investigations: electromyography (EMGTracé rendant compte de l’activité électrique produite par la contraction musculaire, enregistré à l’aide d’une aiguille fine implantée dans le muscle. Il permet de savoir si le problème musculaire est dû à une atteinte des muscles ou à une atteinte des nerfs.), cardiac investigations, pulmonary function tests (PFT), muscle strength testing (myometry), muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and muscle biopsy.
The Service of Neuro-Myology hosts two Rare Disease Reference Centres (CRMR):
- the Nord-Est/Île-de-France Neuromuscular Rare Disease Reference Centre, coordinated by Dr Tanya Stojkovic.
- the Muscle Channelopathies Reference Centre, coordinated by Dr Savine Vicart
Made up of a multidisciplinary team with solid clinical expertise, particularly in therapeutic trials, the neuromuscular disease reference centre is a driving force at national level and is also strongly committed at European level through ERN EURO-NMD, the European Reference Network for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases, which promotes the sharing of expertise on these rare and complex diseases.
