Myology, the study of muscles
Myology is the scientific and medical study of muscle.
Myology (from the Ancient Greek “muos”, muscle) is the scientific and medical study of muscle. This very old discipline, studied since Antiquity, is the reason for the existence of the Institute of Myology, which for almost 30 years has been working to have it recognised, advancing knowledge of the biology, genetics and pathophysiology of muscle and its diseases, and fostering the emergence of innovative therapies for neuromuscular diseases.
Muscles, which account for 40% of our body mass, play a vital role in motor, respiratory and cardiac function and interact with many organs and biological mechanisms. During muscular exercise, for example, muscle secretes small molecules called myokines that spread through the body and have beneficial effects on the whole organism. Furthermore, while 400 neuromuscular diseases have been identified, muscle is also affected in the main chronic diseases such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, but also cancer and diabetes, and it can act as a prognostic marker for them. Because of its prominent place in the human body and its cross-cutting role, muscle lies at the heart of a discipline, myology, which deserves to be taught as such and to be recognised.
Neuromuscular diseases are many and varied. There are 400 of them, affecting muscle, its innervation and its metabolism, and they can impair movement, breathing and cardiac function… Most are genetic, but some are autoimmune or inflammatory.
To be able to cure neuromuscular diseases, AFM-Téléthon has long been exploring the field of myology in order to better understand how muscles work and to identify therapeutic avenues.
In 1996, AFM-Téléthon therefore created the Institute of Myology, a centre of excellence for muscle and its diseases, designed to foster the existence and the recognition of myology by bringing together in a single place basic and applied research, clinical research, evaluation, care and teaching.
Myology, a driving force for innovation
With its multidisciplinary approach and its expertise in translational research on muscle and muscle disease, the Institute of Myology has become one of the world leaders in myology. It contributes to advancing knowledge of the biology, genetics and pathophysiology of muscle and its diseases, and to the emergence of innovative therapies for neuromuscular diseases.
Myology accelerates innovation for:
- Neuromuscular diseases and other chronic diseases (diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancers …)
- Ageing: good muscle health is a key issue in the fight against loss of independence
- The trained muscle: injuries are the leading cause of athletes being unavailable for training and competition
