A scale adapted for newborns with SMA

American and Italian clinicians have developed and tested a new scale that is eagerly awaited in the context of the widespread use of neonatal screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) around the world:

  • this scale, called ‘SMA-NNE’, is largely inspired by an existing tool, the Hammersmith Neonatal Neurological Examination (HNNE), and items from a module used for hypotonic infants (with or without SMA),
  • the study involved 25 infants who, thanks to this new scale, were found to have an asymptomatic form (13 cases), a paucisymptomatic form (5 cases) and a symptomatic form (7 cases).

This scale is easy to administer and can help in the follow-up of patients, whether symptomatic or not.
