Nerve involvement in CMT 1A and HNPP neuropathy (tomacular or pressure palsy neuropathy) may increase the risk of carpal tunnel or cubital tunnel syndrome and complicate their management.
A retrospective study of 112 patients from the Mayo Clinic (USA) showed :
- that the prevalences of carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes are increased compared to the general population in HNPP (53.3% and 43.3% respectively) and CMT 1A (11.5% and 5.8%).
- in HNPP, the operation of the carpal tunnel syndrome was beneficial for 6 out of 10 patients, that of the cubital tunnel only for 1 out of 5, 2 other operated persons having on the contrary worsened.
- in CMT 1A, 5 out of 6 people operated on for carpal tunnel syndrome experienced an improvement in their symptoms.
