The thirty hours of the 2024 Telethon came to a close with a total of 79,801,520 euros raised. A fantastic result for an event held on an unusual date!
The 2024 Telethon will be remembered as a major breakthrough in the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the emblematic disease that led to the creation of the Telethon. Sacha, aged 8, treated two years ago with gene therapy as part of a trial, has regained his strength. Today, he can run and climb stairs four at a time… The fruit of a battle that owes everything to the determination of families, the excellence of researchers and, above all, the commitment and confidence of millions of donors and volunteers since the 1st Telethon.
The Telethon counter will continue to grow in the coming days because, while the victories are more and more numerous, the families who are confronted with the urgency of the disease are asking us: don’t give up!
‘Today, the impossible no longer exists. We made a pact with the public 38 years ago and together we have overcome barriers that many people thought were insurmountable. The first victories so powerfully embodied by the moving Sacha and his parents have paved the way. What the researchers are telling us is that they know how to do it, it’s ‘just’ a question of resources. Our projects are numerous, as are the families waiting for the treatment that will change their lives. We don’t want to have to make a choice, we want to multiply our successes. I would like to say a huge thank you to the families who have taken up our fight this weekend and who are the real heroes of this adventure. They are counting on you!
A huge, huge thank you to Mika, the creative, sensitive, attentive and committed sponsor who took up the incredible challenge of a 30-hour non-stop marathon!’ said Laurence Tiennot-Herment, President of AFM-Téléthon.
